Growing Tips
Black Currants are easy to grow and are adaptable to many different soils and light levels. They’re unique in their ability to produce fruit even in shadier contexts, making them suitable for planting in a food forest, around your orchard trees, and for yards with less direct sunlight. They’re tolerant of most soil types except for extremely water logged. Ben Sarek is moderately resistant to white pine blister rust so avoid planting if you have White Pines nearby.
More about Black Currant 'Ben Sarek'
Black currants are a great low maintenance bush that is perfect for the home gardener. These productive bushes make delicious, aromatic berries in the heat of summer that can be eaten fresh, made into jams, and added into all kinds of fun recipes and beverages. Black currants have a very unique flavour- there is a detectable muskiness paired with sweet and tart that is difficult to describe. The first time I tried them I wasn’t sure how I felt, until I ate them a few more times and began to crave them. Now they’re one of my favourite berries! They’re an acquired taste like some of the best foods are.
