Elderberry 'Scotia'

The Scotia Elderberry was developed in Canada and is known for its exceptionally sweet berries that are fantastic in syrups, juices, and all kinds of baking. The shrubs are very tough, tolerant of different soil types, and prolific growers. The berries are very medicinal and the Scotia selection has smaller berries than other Elderberry selections but are grown commercially because of their higher than usual sugar content.

Growing Tips 🪏

Elderberry is a tenacious grower, and is quite vigorous. It can grow several feet in a year and appreciates well drained soils with good moisture. They will spread horizontally if allowed. They produce the most berries in full sun although they will still have decent production in shadier contexts. We like adding compost and wood chips every year or two. It will tolerate clay soils provided they are loosened, amended, and well drained. They are self fertile but will benefit and produce more fruit with other elderberry cultivars nearby. After establishment, it benefits from renewal pruning or coppicing.
