Growing Tips
Gooseberries are easy to grow and produce well in full sun to part sun. They do have thorns so this should be taken into consideration when choosing a planting site. We like to keep our gooseberries mulched with wood chips and keep the weeds down around them, and they’re one of our favourite bushes to plant around other fruit trees in a food forest context. If you plant them on the southwest side of your fruit tree they can even help to protect from winter sun scald. The fruit turns from green to a dark maroon red when ready.
More about Gooseberry 'Pixwell'
Gooseberry “Pixwell” was grown and selected at the North Dakota Experiment Station in the early 1900’s. More than 100 years later, it’s still grown and loved in many home gardens. It was selected for it’s smaller, less prevalent thorns, hence the name “Pixwell”. These fruits lend themselves great to jams, jellies, and fruit leathers. They are rich in nutrients and antioxidants.
