Growing Tips 🪏

Grape vines are self fertile. Grapes are a vine, so they need some sort of structure to grow upon. Fences, pergolas, a south side of a house, or a wood shed are all great options for growing grapes on provided they have enough sun and are sturdy. They really appreciate full sun and warm microclimates. The grape varieties we offer are extremely hardy, but they survive the harshest temperatures better when the vines are laid on the ground and covered with leaves or even the snow. This way they will be insulated from the cold. We prefer to prune them back in the late fall once they’ve gone dormant before laying them down, putting a small piece of wood on them to secure them to the ground.

Grapes grow best in rich or sandy loam soil. Good drainage is essential when it comes to grapes. If you’re in a more wet landscape, planting them on a substantial berm to give them good drainage is essential. Do not over fertilize them in their first year- this will allow them to direct their energy into developing a strong root system and framework- we prefer using compost or manures over synthetic fertilizers.

More about Grape 'Prairie Star'

For many years growing quality grapes in cold climates wasn’t even a reality! There has been much work put into the research of developing cold hardy grape varieties, and now there are several cultivars available for grape growing in the north that are absolutely delicious. Elmer Swenson is the breeder of Prairie Star grapes, along with many other cold climate grape cultivars. He was integral in the selecting and advancing of cold climate grape growing and we are truly indebted to his incredible work!

Grapes can be susceptible to late spring frosts if you live in a frost pocket- if this is the case and the vines have already begun growing leaves and you’re expecting a frost, cover them up with blankets to protect them.
