Growing Tips 🪏

You will require at least two Hazelnut bushes to cross pollinate each other and produce nuts. Hazelnuts will do well in most soil types including heavy clay if they have good drainage. We accomplish this on our high water table site by planting them on swales or berms and top dressing with compost and wood chips to aid in the drainage of the clay. They make a beautiful hedgerow around 12ft high and are usually ready to harvest in early September depending on the season that year. Your biggest challenge with hazelnuts is that they are absolutely loved by wildlife and you'll have to check your crop regularly once it get's close to harvest season so that you won't miss out on enjoying them.

More about Hazelnuts

Our Hazelnut bushes are crosses of American, Asian, and European Hazelnuts that are made for our cold climates. We are passionate about Hazelnuts and the many gifts they offer to the world. Our Hazelnuts are extremely resilient, cold hardy, and offer incredibly nutritious nuts indefinitely. Our seedlings are hardy to zone 3. They are very easy to grow, and are tolerant of whatever nature can throw at them. These hazels have been grown from seed that has been selected from mother trees originally bred by Morden Experimental Farm in Manitoba and grown out by Ernie Grimo with great qualities of productivity, disease resistance and adaptability. They will have a variation of genetics resulting in differing nut sizes, flavour, production etc as they are all unique seedlings. However, because their parents are productive, cold hardy, disease resistant beings, they're likely to inherit some of these traits, or potentially be better than their parents. The nuts themselves are delicious and have so many of the essential fats and minerals that humans need to be healthy. There is so much potential for them to transform parks, schools, farms, and backyards big and small into food abundant spaces. The nuts are between 50-75% oil by weight, opening up many opportunities as a northern local oil crop. In addition to that, they are extremely high in vitamin e, and have three times the protein of soy beans. The shrubs will begin producing between years 3-6 and will continue to produce for many decades.
