Growing Tips
Pears have an upright growth habit, resulting in a taller height than apple trees, but with less width. They need well drained soil and full sun to grow well. Pear trees need another pear tree that is a different cultivar in order to cross pollinate and get fruit. Our pears are grown on standard Ussurian rootstock. Pear trees prefer well drained soil with moderate levels of fertility, and thrive best in full sun. It’s important to prune them every year in early spring and clean up fallen fruit and leaves and discard them. We also like to give them compost every year or two and then mulch with woodchips or leaves on top of the compost.
More about Pear ’Chizhovsky’
The Chizhovsky pear was developed in Russia after decades of intensive work for cold climates. These pears are juicy, sweet, and have a good balance of acidity. They show resistance to scab and fire blight and are quite productive. Very hardy to zone 3 and worth trying in zone 2 in a protected location. Fruit is ready to eat late August-early September and can be stored up to 3 months in cold storage.
