Growing Tips
Pears have an upright growth habit, resulting in a taller height than apple trees, but with less width. They need well drained soil and full sun to grow well. Pear trees need another pear tree that is a different cultivar in order to cross pollinate and get fruit. Our pears are grown on standard Ussurian rootstock. Pear trees prefer well drained soil with moderate levels of fertility, and thrive best in full sun. It’s important to prune them every year in early spring and clean up fallen fruit and leaves and discard them. We also like to give them compost every year or two and then mulch with woodchips or leaves on top of the compost.
More about Pear 'Summercrisp'
Summercrisp is a cultivar that was developed by the University of Minnesota in the 1980’s in an effort to produce more pear trees that would thrive in extreme cold climates. They had huge success with Summercrisp as it proved to be hardy to zone 3 with no winter die back and had great flavour. It produces early on in the year compared to most pears and has a delicious sweet taste. It can be eaten right off of the tree. Ready to harvest in mid August.
