Growing Tips
You need two different Pear trees for cross pollination to occur. Pear trees prefer well drained soil with moderate levels of fertility, and thrive best in full sun. It’s important to prune them every year in early spring and clean up fallen fruit and leaves and discard them. We also like to give them compost every year or two and then mulch with woodchips or leaves on top of the compost.
More about Pear ’Patten’
The Patten Pear is a late ripening pear that is very cold hardy to zone 3. These large pears are ready to harvest in late September. When first harvested the flavours are very mild- it needs a month of storage to really be at its best. At this stage it is a true treat with a lovely sweet flavour. Patten is also an excellent pollinator of other pear trees and shows resistance to fireblight.
