Growing Tips
You need an American plum or Canada plum to pollinate hybrid plums like Grenville. An American plum or Canada plum can pollinate up to 6 other plums in the same proximity. Plum trees prefer well drained soil with moderate levels of fertility, and thrive best in full sun. It’s important to prune them every year in early spring and clean up fallen fruit and leaves and discard them. We also like to give them compost every year or two and then mulch with woodchips or leaves on top of the compost.
More about Plum 'Grenville'
The Grenville plum was developed in Ottawa, Ontario and is a cross between the Canada plum and a Japanese plum. It is hardy to zone 3. The plums are a real treat, being quite large in size with a sublime sweet honey flavour. Their red orange colour is striking, and their flesh is a golden hue. They are juicy and have great texture. The plums are clingstone and are best eaten fresh, but can also be utilized in preserves like fruit leather. The plums are ready to harvest mid-late August in our area but will vary based on the weather and your location. Shows good resistance to black knot which is a common disease that plagues European plums.
