Growing Tips
You need an American plum or Canada plum to pollinate hybrid plums like Ivanovka. An American plum or Canada plum can pollinate up to 5 other plums in the same proximity. Plum trees prefer well drained soil with moderate levels of fertility, and thrive best in full sun. It’s important to prune them every year in early spring and clean up fallen fruit and leaves and discard them. We also like to give them compost every year or two and then mulch with woodchips or leaves on top of the compost.
More about Plum 'Ivanovka'
These red-purple mottled plums are a delicious treat that are a great choice in northern orchards and food forests. An introduction by I.V. Mitchurin, who sent the scion of Ivanovka to Morden research station in Manitoba in 1939 from Manchuria. It performed very well there, as this tree is no stranger to the extreme cold. Hardy to zone 2, these plums have excellent dessert qualities, with tender thin skin, and sweet juicy flesh. The fruits are ready to harvest in late August and will not disappoint in flavour whether they are eaten fresh or processed. The tree is vigourous, upright and productive annually. Self sterile, it requires American Plum or Canada plum nearby to pollinate. Plums appreciate well drained fertile soil and will not tolerate wet feet.
