Growing Tips
You need an American plum or Canada plum to pollinate hybrid plums like Toka. An American plum or Canada plum can pollinate up to 6 other plums in the same proximity. Plum trees prefer well drained soil with moderate levels of fertility, and thrive best in full sun. It’s important to prune them every year in early spring and clean up fallen fruit and leaves and discard them. We also like to give them compost every year or two and then mulch with woodchips or leaves on top of the compost.
More about Plum 'Toka'
The Toka plum is well loved for it’s delicious bubblegum flavour that distinguishes itself in a truly unique way. It has a very lovely aroma and delicious yellow-orange flesh. It is hardy to zone 3, blooms bountifully each spring, and produces big crops of quality fruit for fresh eating and preserves. It is an Japanese/American hybrid and also displays good disease resistance to diseases like black knot that are common in our woods. Although it is somewhat self fertile, we recommend pairing it with an American plum or Canada Plum in close proximity to ensure adequate pollination. A great choice for northern orchards and food forests!
