Dogwood loves moist soils and is often found on the edges of stream banks. It does well in all levels of sunlight and is an important restoration plant for stabilizing the edges of stream banks and riparian zones.
Red Osier Dogwood berries are edible but are very bitter and not commonly eaten. They are very valuable to wildlife however and are consumed by dozens of animals and birds. Their showy white flowers are also adored by pollinators. This native shrub is a great choice for winter ornamental interest as well, with its striking red bark.
